WhAT IS A RESIDENT?
Nuanced from “intern,” a “resident” speaks of someone who has: 1) embraced a spiritual calling from God to shepherd others through vocational ministry, 2) has some familiarity in carrying out various functions of the pastorate including, but not limited to, preaching and teaching, sacraments, ceremonies, etc., and 3) stands in need of more intentional training and exposure in the way of practical ministry skills, formal theological education and life-on-life mentorship.

Why SOUTHWEST?
With our unique blend of discipleship DNA, a vibrant, generous, and gospel-centered ministry culture, and the necessary conviction and commitment at the highest levels of leadership, Southwest possesses an unparalleled opportunity to raise up and equip the next generation of ministry leaders to serve the Kingdom both in the Coachella Valley and across the globe. We’d LOVE to have you join us!
Will I be paid during my time in the residency program?
Residents are paid for their work at Southwest as part-time staff (~25 hrs/wk) and will receive tuition assistance as they pursue their master’s degrees.
Beyond that, we are also hard at work securing host housing for any residents who would desire it during their residency. Our hope is that every resident would be able to live with a member of Southwest Church for at least a portion of their residency, as we believe these relationships can be deeply meaningful in their development.
Do I have to live in THE VALLEY full-time to be a pastoral resident?
Yes. Our program works by immersion. It's not so much about the material as it is about the formation that takes place as we walk closely alongside you.
When does the residency program begin?
Every resident is different, but most residents should expect to transition to the Valley in mid-July in order to prepare to launch the ministry year with us in August. Each ministry year will extend from August 1st to July 31st.
How long does the residency program last?
Typically, a resident will stay at Southwest for 2 years, giving them ample time to grow as a leader, gain experience across numerous ministry areas, and complete both our in-house training and their seminary education. At the end of each residency year, both the resident and Southwest Church will evaluate if another year in the program would be mutually beneficial. If both agree, the resident will be provided the opportunity to sign on for another year.
How many hours a week can I expect to work?
Our residents stay busy. Between their responsibilities at Southwest, their academic commitments, and their reading assignments, each resident should expect to commit at least 40 hours per week to the residency.
Do all of your residents also pursue A MASTER’S DEGREE?
We hope so. Though it is not a requirement, we believe our program fits well with the formal education seminary provides. We are also willing to work with those who may need to begin or continue undergraduate studies.
What will I be doing during a typical week as a pastoral resident?
In a given week, you can expect to be working on the specific ministry responsibilities you've been given, meeting with our pastors and leaders for development opportunities, gathering together with other residents for encouragement and challenge, and ensuring your academic coursework is completed.
